what i don’t get is why I have to spend gems and skill points on machine gun cartrages
You don’t need to spend any gems at all for cartridges – skill points only on the machine gun cartridges. Gems are only required on the kits, which provide a discount. You can still play the game without the cheaper kits. It just takes longer to get resources to produce the normal cartridges. Either Gem or Grind. Your choice.
